Ireland’s EU Council Presidency has temporarily changed access around one of Dublin’s best-known landmarks. Here is what it means for visitors—and why there is no need to worry about your photoshoot.

A temporary change in the heart of Dublin

If you are visiting Dublin in 2026 and hoping to include Dublin Castle in your plans, there is an important change to know about.

Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2026. Dublin Castle is being used as the main Irish venue for many of the official meetings and events taking place during those six months.

Because of this, the castle is closed to the public for the remainder of the year.

Why is Dublin Castle closed?

Ministers, officials and delegations from across Europe are travelling to Dublin for meetings, conferences and formal events connected to the Presidency.

The closure is not limited to the State Apartments or guided tours. The castle campus and its courtyards are unavailable to normal visitors, while nearby streets may also be affected by security arrangements.

My practical advice: do not build a sightseeing route or photoshoot around entering Dublin Castle during the second half of 2026.

What does this mean for a Dublin photoshoot?

Dublin Castle is normally a lovely place to photograph, with stone archways, elegant courtyards and colourful architecture. For now, however, I would not plan a session that depends on access to the castle.

Security barriers, official events and temporary diversions can affect how close we can get to the castle.

A session should feel relaxed

It is better to choose a location where we know we can move freely rather than arrive to find a street closed.

Dublin offers many alternatives

Historic streets, Georgian squares, cathedral surroundings and river views can create an equally strong Dublin story.

There are still many beautiful alternatives

The good news is that Dublin is full of historic and colourful locations that work beautifully for portraits.

As a photographer, I always check locations before a session, especially when official events, security arrangements or road closures are involved.

Dublin is a very walkable city, and there is nearly always another beautiful street, square or historic backdrop nearby.

Ireland’s EU Presidency is an important moment for the country. For visitors, it also offers a rare glimpse of Dublin Castle being used as a working centre of European politics rather than simply as a tourist attraction.

The castle may be unavailable for a few months, but Dublin still has plenty of stories—and plenty of beautiful places—to photograph.
